How do I deal with the new filter smell when first installing?

    Anonymous2/27/2026

Every time I install a new HEPA filter, there's a chemical-like smell for the first day or two. Is this normal off-gassing? Should I run the purifier on high to clear it, or is the smell itself a concern?

A slight chemical smell from new filters is normal — it's off-gassing from the activated carbon and filter adhesives. Run the purifier on high in a ventilated room for 2–4 hours before placing it in a bedroom. The smell typically dissipates within 24–48 hours.

The smell is more noticeable with carbon filters that use freshly activated charcoal. It's not harmful — just the carbon releasing absorbed gases from manufacturing. Running on high speeds it up significantly.

If the smell persists beyond 48 hours or is very strong, contact the manufacturer. Occasional defective filters with excess adhesive or chemical contamination can occur. Most reputable brands will replace free of charge.
